instinct

I gave up food at 14

dieting at 25

stopped smoking cigarettes at 27

and ceased believing I had control at 34

so your notion that words

change my thoughts

alter my feelings

is really a waste of time

I don’t let things control me

even the idea of control

I live by instinct

like dormouse in the house

only approaching the hand

where kindness is in the bones

even if held cheese would

settle his emaciated belly

and all the cupboards bare

he can sense trustworthiness

as well as have enough logic

to question which bare cupboard

that cheese materialized from

he and I both know

we will never have control over our next meal

or who will offer up that cheese

but we do know which hand to bite

and which to feed from
