afraid of the dark

sleeping with the light on

she carried a matchbook

for low light emergencies

the dark sent shivers

down her spiraled spine

in evening’s midnight

creatures creep and

twisted trees don’t sleep

casting shadows in the moonlight

bigger and mightier

than their truth

once her eyes were opened

kissed awake by love

pressed right upon her hope

stirring her slumber

shaking her house

turning on every tiffany lamp

she could no longer sleep

there was no return

to the dark of night

for now the dark was afraid of her

wherever she walked

wherever she went

her path shone

and she stepped

in Light
